Introduction

The J. A. Albery St. John Ambulance Youth Bursary was created in 1998 by the family of the late James Albery for the purpose of providing post secondary education funding for youth members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade.

James Albery joined the St. John Ambulance Brigade in 1965 as a member of the 159 Toronto (Humewood) Ambulance Division and during his thirty-one year Brigade career held Divisional, Corps, Provincial, and National Officer positions.

During his appointment as the Ontario Provincial Cadet Officer (1975 to 1981), he initiated the first formal educational program in Canada for Brigade Youth Leaders. His original concept of annual, weekend, residential training sessions has grown and expanded over the years to include Council, Branch, and all other Brigade Officers. As the National Cadet Officer (1981 to 1986), he was instrumental in the creation of the (Canadian) Cadet Proficiency Subject Program and when, in 1986, he was appointed National Training Officer he developed and implemented the Brigade Training System for adult Brigade members. By the end of his appointment in 1991, he had also overseen the redevelopment and implementation of the (new) triennial National Brigade Patient Care Competitions. After his Brigade retirement in 1996 as Deputy National Commissioner, he continued his work by contributing to the development of the Brigade's Youth Leaders' Manual, Camp Leadership Manual, and many other Brigade initiatives.

Throughout his years with the Brigade he remained dedicated to the development, expansion, and ideals of the Cadet and Crusader program. In his professional life he was equally dedicated to young people. As a teacher with the York Region Board of Education in Ontario, he was respected by both his colleagues and students for the many innovative and unique educational techniques he pioneered.

In recognition of his extraordinary efforts and many achievements, he was promoted, in 1995, to the grade of Knight of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem.  It is because of his continued commitment to ensuring that today's youth have every opportunity to participate fully and meaningfully as citizens within Canadian society, that this Bursary program was established in his name.

Bursary Award Criteria

Applicants to the J. A. Albery St. John Ambulance Youth Bursary must:

  • be currently active in the Brigade;
  • have been awarded their Grand Prior's Badge;
  • be under the age of twenty-one as of 31 July of the year of application;
  • be entering into, or currently undertaking, post secondary school education; and
  • express a desire to continue their work within the St. John Ambulance organization (Order, Brigade, and/or Association).

All applications must be received on the approved form. While unsuccessful applicants are encouraged to reapply in future years, those who are successful are prohibited from applying for continuing aid. Diploma or degree Nursing (undergraduate or graduate R.N.) programs are not eligible under this Bursary Program as they are more appropriately applied for under the MacLaren, Gilmour or Laurin Nursing Bursaries.

Applications will only be accepted for study within Canada unless the program chosen is not available at a Canadian educational institution or school. All awards will be in Canadian dollars.

Prior to the disbursement of an award, the applicant must provide proof of acceptance into a post secondary school education program. For those applicants who are already enrolled in such a program, transcripts of current academic standing in their chosen program must be provided.

Post secondary school education is not limited to university or college programs nor is it limited to health care/industry related programs. Apprenticeship, certificate, diploma, or degree programs in any profession, trade, or specialty are acceptable.

Any chosen program, however, must be able to provide measurable and meaningful societal, family, and personal outcomes for the applicant.

By common use definition, the term post secondary is generally understood to mean successful completion of secondary school. For the purposes of this Bursary Program, however, a Secondary School Graduation Certificate/Diploma is not necessarily a prerequisite to application. As an example, an apprenticeship program which requires less than secondary school graduate status would be considered provided the applicant met all other application criteria. This section is not intended to encourage applicants to leave secondary school early but, rather, to permit all Brigade youth members the opportunity of maximizing their educational potential.

Awards will be made on or before 31 July of each year, with successful applicants being notified in writing.

Application forms are available from each Provincial/Territorial Council Headquarters or from the Director of Volunteer Support at National Headquarters.  The Official Application form for the J.A. Albery Youth Bursary is also available in PDF format.
