That is a fantastic idea!

They can help perform at Annual Inspections, parades, etc.

I'm sure lots of the cadets are amazing at music.

sounds like a great idea to increase the numbers in our youth divisions. are the members using their own instruments or are they borrowed or bought by the division?

I Know in montreal we USED to have a Pipes and Drum division that `performed` at several events. Alas, 944 disbanded a few years back due to lack of interest and members. However, talk is circulating about getting it back up and running. We just found the kilts ;-)!

All the best with your band, sounds like a great idea.

There used to be bandsmen badges, I tried to get a band going in the 66 div in Kingston, some of the cadets are still interested, hopefully the new Super can get it going.

Blair,

I can't believe they disbanded 944, I loved them at our annual inspections. I hope you guys start it up again.

Sad but true.. there just weren't enough people interested to keep the division running. While there is talk of getting them going again, I'm not sure how realistic that is. We shall see though!

Hi everyone,
I'm the OIC of the band Meggin is talking about, there's about 20 members in the band and they bring their own instruments. We're just getting started so we don't have any funds yet to rent instruments or purchase instruments for them. The band is great so far, we have a place where we can get music from the 15th Field Regiment, which is a Canadian Army Reserve Band here in Vancouver. The only concern I have is that for some reason, there aren't many people that play lower instruments, ie. tuba, baritone, trombone, bassoon, bass clarinet, etc. So hopefully this band will pick up interest and people that play those instruments will join! :-)

Lastly, I've been trying to get the bandsman or lyre badge for the band members, apparently I have to go through NHQ. Is this true?

You may find that the badge is no longer produced by NHQ, you may have to look at either the UK or try the Sea cadets as i think there badges are similar in design and colour

Great idea. But not to knock the cadets (I know you guys are awesome) but there are some of us "Old Fogies" that can play and march (yes I had a mispent youth) who'd be interested in getting involved. Where can we go from here?

hey! me and Bill Sears are in band at Air Cadets as well, Sears can play the pipes and i am learning snare drum so we could probably TRY to start something for Sudbury YO503 but not sure yet. Bill has his own set of pipes and i would probably have to borrow the drum from the Squad but its all good

Actually, Durham St. John Ambulance cadets started a band not that long ago, haven't had a chance to hear them play but from what i hear they aren't that bad.

Didn't you hear them at honours and awards last year Will? They aren't all that great. But apparently they aren't bad this year.

Actually no I didn't hear them. I wasn't there. I was at a friends Prom that night, so the 3 of us missed it. But we did whoop you guys in the drill competition after the honors and awards practise. lol :D

It was pretty close. Like within 5 points or something like that. But we both whooped Oshawa's asses. Well this year it looks like i'll be commanding the drill team so you'd better watch out.

Don't get me wrong, Oshawa did do a good job with the amount of people that they had competing.

We are going to try to renew the interest in our local band. It kind of fizzled out just before Christmas. If anyone in Durham is interested in playing please let me know (and if you are outside of Durham and willing to drive in then you are more than welcome!).

We have 15 members at last count who all supply their own instruments. By the next Honors and Awards Ceremony in May I'd like to see them master O'Canada and God Save the Queen. We'll build from there. Believe it or not, they would then need to select the music they want to play for the Christmas parade so that they can have plenty of time to practice! If they can keep it simple for one year so that they get use to playing together, they can start tackling more complicated music after that.
