I am wondering if anyone other there has any literature or something else in reference to starting a SAR team. I know that Niagara Falls and London have them and we are very interested in starting one, any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is for Heather Oliver. Sorry this isn't Mike from Niagara Falls. I am from St. Thomas. But I do agree, it would be interesting if St. John had more SAR teams

You Thames guys just wish you could have the base we've got! :-) And that's HDTV big screen TV :-) But I'm enjoying things there. My apologies for everyone reading this thread, it doesn't seem to have much to do with SAR anymore... just a bunch of "St. John people!" (instructors will laugh at the reference to the first aid video) who also happen to be medics. :-) Congrats on the AEMCA John! And to think, people were nervous writing that test. :-)

I'm nervous to write it and I still have a year and half to go in my course.

Any pointers would be appreciated :P

Cheers,

Hey, I'm Mike from Sudbury (yes yes, on with the Sudbury jokes), we've just recently formed an affiliation with an already existing SAR group locally. Our future plan as far as I know is to build up enough of a reputation, and membership base to branch off and form our own division. However, not knowing all too much about the SAR field, we found it wise to team up with an existing group, and learn the ropes that way. If anyone has any questions or the like regarding how to form such a partnership, or recommended roles associated with a partnership, feel free to email me: michael.young@on.sja.ca or myoung@uoguelph.ca

Just curious as to which agencies those divisions with S&R are training with?

Guelph has strong ties with Nemo Search and Rescue, based out of Burlington.

London SAR and SAR Niagara are in the process of making SAR Divisions a Provincial Program, it should be up and running soon (2006). If not contact London - Middlesex Corps St. John Ambulance Brigade for more info. Henry Superintendent London SAR D1182

yeah Sudbury did go on a search it was pretty fun considering it was a search. You learn a lot from actually being able to go out and do it rather than just being told about it.

With the increasing lack of volunteers it is hard to see us able to maintain more activities. But don't get me wrong I like the idea of being involved in search and rescue.

I find people are more interested, or rather have more respect towards a qualified 'search and rescuer' as opposed to someone who can do first aid. If we start giving people this option, then hopefully the SAR will spark their interests into that, and they can maybe one day branch into our patient care services as well.
