International Cadet Event 2009: Gather ‘09 A warm hello to the international community of St John Ambulance Youth. St John Ambulance, Priory of England and The Islands are pleased to announce the international Cadet event, Gather ‘09. Bringing together the international family of St John Ambulance Youth, Gather ’09 aims to share the cultures, experiences, ideas and beliefs that affect young people in the world today. Gather ’09 will focus on current issues facing young people, with an emphasis on environmental issues and the work that can be undertaken to tackle the problems that are faced. Other topics will range from politics to youth participation, in an all-inclusive, fun and exciting setting. Gather ‘09 will be marked by open and closing ceremonies, with activities that include a London Monopoly challenge, the international youth first aid competition and a formal masquerade ball. There will also be opportunities for sight seeing, cultural exchange and a whole lot more. The residential event takes place from Sunday 16 August to Saturday 22 August 2009 at the University of Surrey, Guildford (30 minutes from London). Each place costs £350 per delegate (adults and young people), which includes accommodation, activities and most meals. There are limited places available. Each contingent will be given an allocation that must include the appropriate number of leaders (male and female) who are over the age of 18. Young people’s places are limited to those between the ages of 14 and 17 years (inclusive). Each contingent will also require a designated contingent leader who will act as the main point of contact. We request that Priories and St John Associations submit a statement of interest to Nick O’Donohue at our National Headquarters which states the number of places they require, no later than 30th April 2008. When these have been received, application packs will be sent to interested parties, stating place numbers and asking for deposits. Extra places will be made available when we have compiled the information from all contingents. All enquiries should be directed to Nick O’Donohue, Adventurous Activities Advisor, National Headquarters at nick.odonohue@nhq.sja.org.uk Kind regards, Sarah Holmes Chief Commissioner Youth Information Letter - Gather'09 - PDF |

For information sharing with all volunteers, instructors, employees We are currently planning the Spring 2008 Edition of the SJA Ontario FOCUS Newsletter. Could I ask those that are interested in submitting articles and/or photos to get their submissions in to me no later than Monday, March 3, 2008. Note that if you are submitting photos for publication, please ensure that corresponding photo releases are signed and returned along with all photo submissions. I have attached a blank photo release form for your use. While every effort is made to include all submissions received, we sometimes cannot include all of the stories. In cases where we receive multiple submissions from one location, we try to limit stories so we can give Focus a more province-wide feel. This is often a difficult decision because there are a number of branches who regularly submit several excellent articles for each issue. Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to reviewing your submissions. Regards, Brian Brian Cole Director, Standards and Support St. John Ambulance - Council for Ontario 15 Toronto Street, Suite 800 Toronto, Ontario M5C 2E3 Tel: +1 (800) 268-7581 ext. 243 Fax: +1 (416) 923-4856 Email: bcole@on.sja.ca Photo Release Form - PDF |

Durham Region Youth Camp at the Ganaraska Forest Centre February 8-10, 2008 Durham Region is holding a winter camp at the Ganaraska Forest Centre the weekend of Feb 8-10, 2008. They have opened it up to all divisions within Ontario. This is a great opportunity for Youth Divisions to experience camping who may not have the ability to do so on their own. The weekend is full of indoor and outdoor activities and offers indoor sleeping accommodations for those that are not keen in sleeping out in a tent in the winter. For those brave souls who like to winter camp in a tent, there is more than enough room to pitch a tent for the experience. Cost for the weekend is $40 per person. All the information is included in the attached files and completed form with payment are due to St. John Durham Region Office by January 25th. Here is the web site for the Ganaraski Forest Area and Centre for you to view http://www.grca.on.ca/ganfor.htm We look forward to an exciting weekend in the snow.
