Camp Accreditation Course - April'06

TO: Community Services Units FROM: Doug Keith, Provincial Youth Co-ordinator
DATE: March 2006
RE: Camp Accreditation Course for 2006 - Certificate Program

St. John Ambulance members enjoy camping and throughout this country many St. John Ambulance Camps take place. To ensure proper training standards for our youth leaders, the National Camp Accreditation Course is designed to train competent leaders who will operate a successful, safe camp for their members.

It is the responsibility of all community services leaders that proper application to hold a camp is made to our Provincial Office and that all necessary safety issues are addressed in the application to hold a camp. One of these safety issues is the proper supervision of all participants and the inclusion and participation of supervisory leaders on the camp staff who are certified and in good standing with our National Camp Accreditation Program.

With the help of Mr. Scott Cowley, it is our intention to provide a course on the April 28th-30th, 2006 weekend at Blue Springs Scout Reserve (West of Acton, off Hwy 25 north of 401). This course will involve both indoor classes and outdoor practical exercises. Accommodation for course candidates will involve sleeping indoors with the option of sleeping outdoors in tents. This is a full course, so no previous experience is necessary. Candidates wishing to maintain their Level or challenge for a Level upgrading may attend on the Saturday only and demonstrate their skills, but will be required to show evidence of camping history for the past three years in order to maintain or upgrade. The candidate cost for the full course will be $60 ($20 for Saturday only) and will cover all meals, accommodation and course materials while on course. Travel costs will be the responsibility of the course candidates. Deadline for registration is April 14, 2006.

We encourage interested units to identify suitable candidates to ensure that they are in a position to run camps should they choose to incorporate them into their programs throughout the year. Youth leaders 18 years of age or over or Adult members 18 years of age or over who are in good standing in St. John, including having a police record check on file with our Provincial Office may be considered for this course. The recommended National Course Syllabus can be found online at: Manual Section 2-3-4b PDF

Our successful partnership with Xerox

To: Branches, RCSCs, Council for Ontario Staff
From: Terry Wardrop
Subject: XBS
Date: April 11, 2006

Council for Ontario has enjoyed a successful partnership with Xerox for the past five years.
As of April 15th, 2006 our contract with Xerox reaches its fulfillment.

Over the past several months, we have done an extensive review of the services and costs
associated with having on-site third party service for Graphics, Stores and Mailroom
functions. After much deliberation, and purely for economic reasons, we have elected not
to renew a contract with Xerox.

Geoff Li will continue in his current role of providing graphics and operations support.
Effective April 16th, 2006, Geoff will become a St. John Council for Ontario employee
reporting to Gail Opaleychuk who is responsible for our Facilities Management. He will be a
welcome addition to our group and we are pleased that he has agreed to join the family of
St. John. Geoff will continue to provide you with excellent service for your graphics and
print needs.

Nelson Raposo and Cameron Herman are moving on to other Xerox locations. We thank them
for their service to us and wish them well in their new endeavours.

This change means that Council for Ontario will be hiring a new person to manage our Stores
operation. We have been actively recruiting for this role, but have not found the ideal
candidate as yet. We ask for your patience during our search.

It is my goal to make this transition as seamless as possible with minimal interruption to your needs. To that end, we will have an interim person on site to handle all Stores orders. Effective April 18th, please use the following process to place orders with our Stores department. We ask that you please not phone orders in.

Email requests to stores@on.sja.ca
Fax requests to (416) 923-4856

To speak directly with Stores personnel, continue as you have in the past by dialing our phone number and keying in extension 234. For additional support, questions or comments
please dont hesitate to contact Gail directly (gopaleychuk@on.sja.ca) (416) 923-8411
x242.
