Camp Accreditation Course - Certificate Program
May 23rd-25th, 2008

TO: Unit Superintendents/Coordinators
FROM: Doug Keith, Provincial Youth Program Advisor
DATE: April 10, 2008
RE: Camp Accreditation Course for 2008 - Certificate Program

St. John Ambulance (SJA) Members enjoy camping and throughout this country many SJA Camps take place. To ensure proper training standards for our leaders, the National Camp Accreditation Course is designed to train competent leaders who will operate a successful, safe camp for their members.”

It is the responsibility of all SJA Branches and affiliated Community Services leaders, that proper application to hold a camp is made to the SJA Provincial Office and that all necessary safety issues are addressed in the application to hold a camp. One of these safety issues is the proper supervision of all participants and the inclusion and participation of supervisory leaders on the camp staff who are certified and in good standing with SJA’s National Camp Accreditation Program.

With the help of one of SJA’s camp specialists, Scott Cowley, it is our intention to provide a course this Spring. We are looking at holding a course on the May 23rd-25th, 2008 weekend at Kiwanis Apps Mill Centre (West of Brantford, off Hwy 403 South). Applications for this Spring course will be due by May 09th. This course will involve both indoor classes and outdoor practical exercises. Accommodation for course candidates will involve both sleeping indoors and sleeping outdoors in tents. This is a full course, so no previous experience is necessary. Candidates wishing to maintain their Level or challenge for a Level upgrading may come on the Saturday only and demonstrate their skills, but will be required to show camping history for the past three (3) years in order to maintain or upgrade. The candidate cost for this course will be $60 for the weekend ($20 for Saturday only) and will cover all meals, accommodation and course materials while on course. Transportation costs will be the responsibility of the course candidates.

We would like Units to identify suitable candidates to ensure that every unit can be in a position to run camps should they choose to incorporate them into their programs during the coming year. Youth leaders 18 years of age or over or Community Services members 18 years of age or over who are in good standing in St. John Ambulance, having a suitable police record check on file with our Provincial Office may be considered candidates for these courses. The recommended National Course Syllabus can be found online at StJohnOnline.ca

RE: National Youth Leadership Training Course for 2008 - Certificate Program - Brantford - May 24 & 25, 2008

The National St. John Ambulance (SJA) Youth Leadership Training Program is a course that continuously evolves and is currently being rolled out to all SJA Youth Leaders across Canada. This informative course introduces leaders to the SJA Youth program, and outlines all the required information and disciplines needed to run an effective SJA Youth program. This course is essential for all SJA Youth leaders and SJA Community Services support staff (RCSCs, Volunteer Coordinators, etc.) across Canada that have direct involvement with SJA Youth. Current SJA Youth leaders and support staff are required to have certification in this course. New SJA Youth leaders and others that provide direct support to the youth program are required to attend the course within the first year of taking on their position.

The St. John Council for Ontario will be holding this course the weekend of May 24 & 25, 2008 in Brantford, Ontario. The course will be held at the Kiwanis Apps Mill Park which is located at 335 Robinson Road just west of Brantford. The course will run from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Sunday.

This course is located in a conference-facility setting with optional accommodation available. The course itself is no charge for pre-registered attendees and you need only attend the course during the daytime. It may be preferable to take advantage of the accommodation setting since there is great potential for networking/idea sharing in the evening with other leaders. The accommodations are $50 per person for the weekend which includes lodging (1-2 per room) and all meals for Saturday and Sunday. Daytime attendees (no accommodations) will be provided refreshments in the morning and a full lunch at no charge. Coffee and tea will be available at all times to everyone. Travel expenses (including accommodation) for the weekend will be the responsibility of participants.

A copy of the course manual is available on-line for viewing at www.StJohnOnline.ca under the resources tab. A hard copy of the manual will be provided to you when you take the course.

Attached is an application form for the Brantford Y.L.C. Course. After receiving the completed registration, the SJA Provincial Office will send a confirmation back to the applicants with joining instructions and directions on how to get to the venue. The course is limited to 16 registrants and will be on a first come first serve basis, so send your application in early. Applications are due back to the Provincial Office no later than May 9, 2008.

We at Council are committed to the National goal of having all of our Youth leaders and support trained. This course is a national Youth Leader requirement and failure to attend one of these courses may affect your youth leadership/participation status.

To SJA Branches in Ontario - for information sharing with all MFR Units ~

The following is in response to several inquiries with respect to clarifying how to engage new Medical First Response (MFR) volunteers in Ontario.

St. John Ambulance Medical First Responders must be at least 16 years of age and physically and mentally capable of performing the activities that are reasonable for the type of service they are to provide.

Candidates for MFR enrolment who are 16 or 17 years of age must have the written consent of their parent or guardian to enrol in the MFR program. Candidates for MFR enrolment who are 16 or 17 years of age and who are not residing with their parent or guardian may consent on their own behalf.

They must hold, as a minimum at the time of enrolment, valid Standard first aid and Level “B” CPR certificates from a nationally recognized training agency.

Enrolment equivalency for first aid/CPR qualifications will be considered for professional health care providers in active clinical practice; however this will not negate the need to achieve additional minimum standards for performing medical first response activities on behalf of the organization.

Interested candidates must also comply with St. John Ambulance’s (SJA) volunteer screening cycle requirements. For additional information on these screening cycle requirements and a copy of the SJA Screening Cycle Policy, please contact your SJA Provincial/Territorial Office.

Following successful enrolment, new members are encouraged to participate in operational training and orientation that should include attendance at patient care events for the purpose of learning (instruction, observing, and assisting) and work with the MFR pre-course materials to develop a base understanding of service delivery prior to and during formal MFR training. It should be recognized that this training, orientation, and development of a pre-course comfort level may take up to six months or more for some members.

Once volunteers age 16 or older achieve a valid SJA AMFR1 certification, they will be eligible to provide independent patient/client care as Medical First Responders (attached to either a Youth or Adult Service Unit).

It is also required that those MFR volunteers under the age of 18 be paired with an experienced MFR volunteer for an appropriate period of orientation, assessment and mentorship. Note: While AMFR1 certification is valid for three years, all St. John Ambulance Medical First Responders (regardless of age or unit) will be required to participate in refresher and/or continuing medical first responder education throughout the three year period and will be required to maintain knowledge and skill specific certifications based on provincial/territorial requirements (e.g. AED).

In Ontario, there is a designated working dress for MFR volunteers which includes, but is not limited to, Medical First Response identifiers (shoulder flashes) and an optional black "trooper-style" working dress shirt. Members of MFR units/services, including new MFR members and MFR leaders are entitled to wear the MFR working dress and identifiers, however unit leaders should use discretion with respect to when service dress and identifiers are issued to new members. Certified AMFR1 Medical First Responders are also entitled to wear shoulder epaulettes with two-orange bars on each epaulette.

For more information on volunteer engagement and service standards, feel free to contact the St. John Ambulance - Council for Ontario (Provincial Office).

Brian Cole

Youth Leaders Workshop – 2008
Saturday, April 12th

TO: Adult and Youth Units
C: Admin Centres, Branches, RCSCs and Volunteer Coordinators
FROM: Doug Keith, Provincial Youth Program Advisor
DATE: January 29, 2008
RE: Youth Leaders Workshop – 2008 – Saturday, April 12th

How do I do that? What can I do about this? I need some new ideas!!!!! I have great ideas! I want to help, but I’m not sure how?

The St. John Council for Ontario will be holding it’s second annual Youth Leaders Workshop at the University of Guelph on Saturday, April 12th, 2008. Registration is at 8:30 am in the MacKinnon Hall with workshop sessions taking place between 9 am and 5 pm. Lunch will be provided to participants. It is encouraged that all St. John Ambulance members 18 and over that deal directly with Youth or wish to better understand our Youth Program should attend. This workshop is one of the largest gatherings of Youth Leaders and the potential of gaining valuable information and networking with other Youth Leaders and supporters of our Youth Program is immense.

Similar to last year’s workshop, we will have 4 main informative sessions that will focus on:
  • Camping and Beyond
  • Evaluating SJA Leaders, Volunteers, Youth
  • Competition – coaching, participating, organizing
  • To be determined.

All participants will have an opportunity to attend each session.

There will be several ½ hour breaks through the day so you can ask any questions that you have and share your ideas with other participants. There will be plenty of experienced Youth Leaders and resource people identified and available who will be glad to answer any questions that you have. As well there will be some allocated time within the sessions to have discussion and ask the questions related to the session topics.

Last year’s workshop was a great success and we are hoping to continue this success on into this year’s workshop.

Doug Keith
Provincial Youth Program Advisor
