To the Therapy Dog Co-ordinators and their Assistants who attended the Meeting of the Minds on Saturday, May 31st....Thank you - Thank you!! Many of you drove a good distance to be there on Saturday but I am sure you are feeling it was well worth it. It was a great meeting with long over due discussions. It was great to put some names to faces. I think we also appreciated Brian Cole taking the time out to attend as well. On behalf of all the Coordinators and the Assistants we pray that the planned Seminar in September WILL happen!! |

I'm a teacher and new to St Johns but I've seen cadets before treat and I think maybe you folks should rethink this policy change. Also that bit about the new Regional leadership should definitely have to answer to everyone they are supposed to be representing not just a favoured few - an annual review is an excellent way for this to happen but I sense there are some unhappy people afraid to voice their opinion in case it comes back to haunt them, an anonymous place would be good or at least a way to block out their names if they desire since this sounds like it could become a sensitive issue and above all we must protect the privacy of the person voicing an opinion if that is their request. Other than that great site folks a lot of good exchange of information (Message edited by teach on March 18, 2007) |

The Durham Emergency Management Office held it's annual exercise yesterday. This time it was at the Uxbridge Community Center evaluating the process in place for running an Evacuation Center. The scenario was a train derailment on the busy rail corridor that passes through the center of town, and neighboring homes had to be evacuated until it was safe to return. I would like to thank the Crusaders from the Oshawa Youth Unit (Robin, Shelly, Ashley and Kevin), volunteers of the Ajax (Laura), Oshawa (Eric, Midge, Erik) and Lindsay MFR Units, our RCSC Staff (AJ and Andy) and the Durham Branch (Marsha and Tina) for participating in the exercise and planning process. This was definitely a valuable training tool that allowed us to test, not only our own SJA process, but also how we interact with other agencies under these types of conditions. SJA was put to the test within the first five minutes of the bus loads of casualties hitting the reception desks. We ended up processing one casualty every two minutes! It's not likely that we would be required to treat this many casualties in this short amount of time, however it did force our MFR Teams to think on their feet and understand what it feels like to work under this kind of pressure. Our volunteers saw everything from West Nile symptoms to pink eye to mass cases of food poisoning (due to a simulated malfunctioning refrigerator). These were just a few of the cases our MFR Teams had to work through (I won't tip you off on ALL of them though!). Our direct interaction with Social Services, EMS, Public Health, OVERT and Red Cross allowed us to adopt new policies regarding how patients are handed over to us, treated and then released. It was interesting to see how the original game plan in place has now been expanded and refined to include policies that we might not have thought of (or even thought necessary) had we not participated in this exercise. I encourage all of our other Units to take part in exercises being run locally in your own Regions. If there is not one locally I'm sure you could participate as a casualty or observer in a mock disaster in a neighboring Region. Again, thanks to our members who participated this year, and I look forward to working through the next mock disaster in the fall of 2007. |

Thanks to all who participated and helped out with the annual Durham Corn Roast! It was great to see volunteers from Cadets, Therapy Dogs (and handlers), MFR, Fellowship, Instructors and Branch staff show up to this event. We'll see you all there again next year! Last Saturday, the Durham Region Branch and their Community Service Units held their Annual Inspection at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. Thank you to all of our Volunteers who participated in the Annual Inspection! A lot of effort went into making this event happen, and we were pleased with the impression this left on our guests, and on the recipients of the awards. It was nice to see our Volunteers being recognized in front of this many Units, instead of just their home Unit. Also, Congrats to the Oshawa Conant Youth Unit for winning the "Most Improved Cadet Unit" and "Best Unit on Parade" (as well as winning the Drill Competition a few days before!). The hard work you have been putting in paid off, and I'm glad to see you being recognized for it. I look forward to seeing what we can do to make next years event, even more successful! |

Terry, Please refer to the new Medical First Response Services Manual posted on the National Intranet website. It can be found under the "Community Services" menu on the left hand side of the screen. It does mention that Youth Services members can continue to attend events as observers and can assist MFR members (adults and youth leaders alike) with non-patient care related duties... as has been the case for a number of years here in Ontario. Hope that this doesn't find too much of an interruption in the service your youth members provide! Cheers, Michael Lawrence, Divisional Nursing Officer Mississauga D0504 MFR Services Division |

There should be no change Terry. Youth Services Members have always assisted and observed those certified Members 18 years of age and older. The only thing that changes is the certification of the supervising Patient Care Services Member.

Hello all. I am an officer in a cadet division in Calgary and have been asked to get some information. Calgary as of January 1st is going to the MFR program and I know that this has been implemented in Ontario for some time. We are being told by our Provincial headquarters that because of the MFR cadets will no longer be able to do any care on duties because of legalities. Is this true? We have a very strong division and most of our cadets do a lot of duties. We are quite concerned of how this will effect our membership. If anyone has any thoughts please share. I recently went to Ontario Council to pick up a copy of the Juniors Manual and Juniors Games Book. They have a PDF file but it is on an older computer. Could we see if our Provincial Cadet Officer could facilitate getting that file transferred over to the resources section of Cadets Online? It may take a bit of work but I think it would be worth it. I have had several people ask me where to get a copy (mine had oddly vanished) and it may be a good idea if Superintendents could research the program first before diving in. The manual is excellent and makes running the program less complicated than you would think. I have had several Juniors move up to Cadets and they already have the basics nailed down for rookie Cadets. |

This message is pertaining to the comments made by the YO503 division. The division was on hold due to the loss of all the senior officers and new officers had to be found. SJA has a name to live to and if we just threw in any person into a leadership role, it could be a disaster. We have just found a new DS and the cadet meetings will begin on September 25 from 6-8pm. This will be an orientation night and parents are encouraged to meet the new DS. Sometimes a little patience helps and facts should be known before you make comments on a public posting. |

Thank you to all of the Cadets from Whitby and Oshawa for marching in the VE parade last Sunday (Veterans celebration at the Oshawa Air Port). Nice to see that we turned a few heads when they saw SJA marching with the military cadet groups (we actually outnumbered the army cadets!). Was great that we were able to honor our Veterans this way during the ceremony. They were very appreciative of the participation of so many youth from our community (there were well over 200 people in the parade). |

Did you know that this is National Nursing Week? If I am on the ball next year I will make sure that our local Cadets and Therapy Dogs make a point of extra visits during this week for next year (I am a bit late this time around). Visiting patients in hospitals and Long Term Care Units ( and old folks homes) take the minds of the patients (or residents) off of their current surroundings and put them in a more positive mood (which means less calls to the nurses stations). The volunteers can also thank the nurses personally during their visits for helping out our communities through the care they give our neighbors. Maybe some of you can react more quickly than I can and do something for YOUR nurses this week. You still have five days to go!

The Durham Ganaraska Games were great! Thank you to all of our Officers and Adult leaders for helping out, you did a fantastic job! Our NCOs and team leaders were excellent at keeping their teams moving and motivated (I'm hoping some of the photos will get posted within the next week). Also, thanks to all of the team members for participating. It's a lot more fun when everyone gets involved and helps out their team! I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do next year! But what a great way to make sure everybody is up out of bed!
