Subject Listing Revised as of November 1997

The Cadet Proficiency Program is an integral part of
the total St. John Ambulance youth program. It encourages Cadets and Crusaders to deepen
and broaden their interests, talents and skills in many areas. Certificates, badges, and
the Grand Priors Badge, give recognition to St. John youth who have committed time
and effort to meet the required standards.
This manual has been designed to meet the needs of
Youth Officers in guiding their members through the Proficiency Program. It is a series of
outlines to be used as guidelines by the experts who act as instructors or evaluators for
the candidates.
The format of each Proficiency Subject outline is : Objective(s),
Prerequisites, Instructors/Evaluators, References and materials, Content, Duration,
Certification, Counterfoil for the Instructors/Evaluators signature
Instructors/Evaluators
The Cadet Officer is not expected to instruct or
evaluate candidates in more than a few Proficiencies. Instead, resource people from the
surrounding community may volunteer their time and knowledge to help candidates in their
Proficiency work. Suggestions for possible Instructors and Evaluators are listed in each
outline. Cadet Officers may know of many other suitable resources within their
communities. The outlines in this manual are to be used as guidelines for these community
experts, indicating what St. John Ambulance expects of the individual Cadet or Crusader in
each subject. The exact content and method of teaching is left to the
Instructor/Evaluator.
Criteria
Every youth member must be given the opportunity to
work towards the highest of all the Cadet awards - The Grand Priors Badge.
This award is highly regarded and is presented, in some provinces, by the
Lieutenant-Governor. It is the only Cadet merit award badge which may be worn on the St.
John Ambulance uniform as long as the individual is a member of the Brigade.
The following are the requirements of
Cadets/Crusaders wishing to qualify for the Grand Priors Badge:
- Completion of a total of twelve Proficiency Subjects.
At least one proficiency in each of the above categories must be completed.
- Knowledge of the Order is a compulsory
category.
- No more than four subjects may be completed in a
calendar year.
- The Grand Priors Badge will not normally
be awarded until a Cadet/Crusader has a minimum of three years membership in good
standing.
- Youth who have qualified in a Proficiency Subject
prior to becoming a Cadet/Crusader are permitted to include their training up to two years
before their enrolment date.
- Certificates will not be awarded prior to the
youths official enrolment, or after their 21st birthday.
- In the case of candidates with disabilities, some
proficiencies might require special consideration. In some cases, the Instructor/Evaluator
should decide the acceptable level for certification or the suitability of the proficiency
requirement(s).
Here's the Challenge!
Now that we have our own WebPage on the Internet, we must all learn to use this page as a
resource to aid its development. Not only should this page become a resource for you to
use; but you must also become a resource for others! How? We need all of our resourceful
Cadet Leaders and Members to assist in the development of this page by submitting
commented, hyperlinks, URLs, personal documents/manuals/handouts and alike which we can
use to develop our resource listings on this page. As you develop
documents/manuals/handouts which you would permit others to use (with full recognition of
its source); as you find interesting and useful sites on the internet that have helped you
develop your local programme; we want you to share them with us. Send them via fax or
email to us and we will check them out and incorporate them into our Cadet Programme Page.
