Service Shield

The Special Service Shield is awarded by the Provincial Commissioner to Cadets/Crusaders who have completed a minimum of 200 voluntary hours of service to their community. On completion of each additional 200 hours of service, an appropriate Service Shield will be awarded. While these shields may be worn on the member's uniform until their 19th birthday, these Shields will not be awarded to Crusaders subsequent to their 16th birthday. St. John Juniors are not eligible for the Special Service Shield. Only the highest Service Shield earned is to be left on a Cadet or Crusader's uniform.

The following categories are recognized categories under which Cadets and Crusaders may qualify for the Shield Shields. All forms of service must be arranged or approved by the Cadet's/Crusader's own Divisional Superintendent.

  • Assist at Brigade Public First Aid Duties or other Brigade services in the community
  • Unpaid assistance at St. John Ambulance classes of instruction for the public, either in clerical duties or as patients or demonstrators.
  • Unpaid assistance at St. John Ambulance functions (as ushers, casualties, simulators and messengers), except where the cadet or crusader would normally be expected to be present; eg training meetings, cadet inspections, normal teach competitions where the cadet/crusader is a participant.
  • Volunteer work of any useful type in hospitals, clinic, convalescent homes, nurseries, home for the aged, provide such work is sanctioned by the institution concerned and is arranged or approved by the Divisional Superintendent.
  • Organized work involving the making of toys, training aids, handicrafts, or other articles for use in training courses or in institutions for the aged, sick, very young, disabled and other people in need.
  • Care of children at camps of non-profit welfare organizations, including the disabled.
  • Voluntary assistance provide to elderly, disabled, infirm or other persons with special needs in the community. Examples of this type of assistance including, escort duties, shipping, odd jobs, baby sitting, home care assistance, housekeeping, cooking, light construction or maintenance, gardening, etc.
  • Unpaid assistance to other service of welfare organizations in their community work, or in fund rasing activities, but only in accordance with our Brigade guidelines.
  • Canvassing for St. John Ambulance or for local United Appeals in which St. john Ambulance is a Member Agency.
  • Participation in public displays, demonstrations, presentations, or recruiting drives organized for Brigade or Cadet publicity purposes.
